Pilot evaluation of hypnosis for the treatment of hot flashes in breast cancer survivors.
This single arm, pilot study investigated the use of hypnosis to reduce hot flashes in 16 breast cancer survivors. Each patient provided baseline data and received 4 weekly sessions of hypnosis that followed a standardized transcript. Patients were also instructed in self-hypnosis. Throughout the clinical care, patients completed daily diaries of the frequency and severity of their hot flashes. Patients also completed baseline and post-treatment ratings of the degree to which hot flashes interfered with daily activities and quality of life. Results indicated a 59% decrease in total daily hot flashes and a 70% decrease in weekly hot flash scores from their baselines. There was also a significant decrease in the degree to which hot flashes interfered with daily activities for all measures including work, social activities, leisure activities, sleep, mood, concentration, relations with others, sexuality, enjoyment of life, and overall quality of life. This pilot study suggests that clinical hypnosis may be an effective non-hormonal and non-pharmacological treatment for hot flashes. A randomized, controlled clinical trial is planned to more definitively elucidate the efficacy and applicability of hypnosis for reducing hot flashes. Copyright (c) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

When you look in the mirror, do you see you own worst critic? Yes, I know that you are aware of every failing, mistake, and goof that you’ve made during your life. Well, you are not alone. All of us see that person staring back at us. On the other hand, what you are probably not seeing are all the positive things that you have accomplished in your life. What is smoking, why should I care, and how do I quit?
Smoking includes the inhalation of burning tobacco into your airways – to include your lungs. It is done as an addictive habit. Once a non-smoker gets past the initial awkwardness of the act of smoking, the social benefits and simultaneous calming and stimulus benefits lead to a frequent repetition. Unfortunately, this seemingly harmless act both stimulates the release of various pleasure-related chemicals in the brain and become a learned habit, which eventually becomes deeply ingrained in their brain.
The fact that the act...
Reading comprehension involves a person’s ability to rapidly translate perceptions in to the how and why of meaning. It also refers to their ability to recall information when needed. Hypnosis can help a person significantly improve in both areas.
One of the main obstacles to comprehension – and reading speed as well – is a person’s stress level. In order to comprehend fully, the associated areas of the brain must be activated. However, during a high stress period, this is difficult as problem solving and survival-related areas of the brain are rightfully considered more important. By...
