Hypnosis for symptom management in women with breast cancer: a pilot study.
Eight women who were in treatment for breast cancer (n = 4) or breast cancer survivors (n = 4), presenting with 1 or more of 4 symptoms (chronic pain, fatigue, hot flashes, and sleep difficulties), were given 4 to 5 sessions of self-hypnosis training for symptom management. Analyses revealed (a) significant pre- to posttreatment decreases in pain intensity, fatigue, and sleep problems and (b) that pain intensity continued to decrease from posttreatment to 6-month follow-up. Although there was a slight increase in fatigue severity and sleep problems from posttreatment to 6-month follow-up, the follow-up scores did not return to pretreatment levels. The findings provide initial support for using hypnosis to manage symptoms in women who are breast cancer survivors. Clinical trials evaluating hypnosis efficacy over and above other treatments are warranted.

Brain entrainment is not a new phenomenon. For thousands of years humans have used the flickering lights of fires, the beating of drums and whirling, changing objects to help induce a trance state. But with the advent of audio technology, science has sought to mimic the environmentally triggered brain entrainment with carefully designed tones and flickering lights. From the Dreammachine (a sound and light machine developed in the 1970’s and embraced by artists to help them achieve altered states) and the discover of binaural beats in that same decade, to the sophisticated technology of the...
Why does anyone still smoke? Just about everywhere you go nowadays you see signs that clearly state that smoking is not allowed. Yet despite all of the sanctions, taxes, peer pressure, and with over 440,000 deaths every year in the US, there remain millions of hardcore tobacco users who just don’t seem to want or be able to stop this habit.
Clearly, the fact tobacco products cause cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, and oral cavity should motivate any sane...
Generally, grief is considered a response to the loss of someone or something to which a person is attached. More specifically, however, this condition represents a situation in which there is a major disruption in the patterns to which a person has become accustomed. As the patterns of interaction with a person or thing with which a person is specifically strongly bonded are some of the most powerful, the coping and adjustment period is often one with very intense suffering. This they have been when there's a loss of a spouse, a parent, a sibling, or even the loss of a home due to disaster...
