How do you become a better person?

We’re at the beginning of a new decade. The end of 2009 left many people shell-shocked from the world-wide economic meltdown. Thousands have lost jobs, homes and life savings. But, as with any adversity, humans have the ability to recreate themselves, to create a better future.

However, change – whether on a global scale or personal – starts with thought. To change your weight, your finances, your outlook on life you have to change how you think. There is power in thought. It is where creativity begins. If you cannot perceive of yourself as being slim, it’s unlikely that you’ll lose the weight. If you don’t think like a millionaire, it will be very difficult to change your finances.

I read a book recently that described the four things you need to do to change your life. The first thing is to find the right tools. Be an explorer. Use the Web to research all the available things you could use to help you change your mind. It could be books. It could be meeting up with similar individuals to discuss a topic for change. It could be Hypnosis or coaching.

The second step is to start playing with ideas. Be creative. How could you do things differently? Examine all the things in your life you take for granted? What things thrill you? What possessions actually keep you enslaved to your current lifestyle? Financial health may be increasing your income or it could be downsizing to a more modest lifestyle so that you have the money to do the things you love. Or it could be pursuing an idea that could be the next Velcro or Cabbage Patch doll. Better health could be as simple as quitting the stressful job you hate to work in a job that inspires you.

The third step is to evaluate the ideas you have come up with. What are the ramifications of quitting your job tomorrow? Will you have to plan ahead and wait 12 months? What funding do you need to launch your new money-making idea? Are there things you can do today to help relieve your stress so that you can handle things better? This third stage could send you back to either look for more information or be creative again to find a way that will be viable.

The fourth step is action. No idea will help you change your life unless you take steps to implement it. Design a plan to change your life that includes specific action steps you can take. A New Year’s Resolution is meaningless unless act on it.
