Biofeedback and Relaxation Techniques Improves Running Economy in Sub-Elite Long Distance Runners
A study out of The University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, looked at whether a combination of biofeedback and relaxation could decrease oxygen consumption in long distance runners and thus improve their running economy and performance. Seven long distance runners were tested for running economy, peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak), peak running velocity, and stretch-shortening cycle efficiency.
These runners then participated in a 6-wk training program in which they learned and practiced relaxation techniques and ran on the treadmill at a velocity eliciting 70% of peak running velocity for 10 min while biofeedback of heart rate (HR), ventilation (VE), and VO2 was presented to them. Data indicated that participants were able to lower their VO2, HR, and VE at lactate threshold by 7.3%, 2.5%, and 9.2%, respectively, using relaxation techniques (P<0.05). Post-tests of lactate threshold, VO2peak, peak running velocity, and stretch-shortening cycle efficiency showed that these changes did not occur as a result of a training effect. The researchers concluded that the improvements in running economy occurred as a result of the relaxation and biofeedback intervention.
A primary challenge with helping someone lose weight through hypnosis is the fact that eating is required for survival. Also, once a certain body image is established, this becomes a pattern that is very hard to contradict. So unlike something like smoking cessation where the use of tobacco products, which are basically poisonous to human, when working with the typical weight-loss client the goal is not cessation of regulation.
Any hypnosis session for weight-loss client therefore should focus both on increasing perceptions of safety as well as establishing a new body image. Like with just...
If you occasionally have problems such as shortness of breath, wheezing, a frequent cough, or chest tightness, chances are you are suffering from asthma. And, there's over a 50% chance that your asthma is being caused by an allergy. Asthma can involve a tightening of the airwaves, a swelling of the lining of the airways, and increased mucus production in your lungs. In turn, a predominant cause is your body's reaction to an allergen. As such, one must consider the role of the immune system with each to branches: adaptive and innate. Essentially, your mind and body have learned to react to...
I vividly remember the time that I learned of my mortality. I was probably around four or five years old when I suddenly realized that I was not going to live forever. As I matured and grew older – and having survived a near fatal automobile accident – I decided that I wanted to focus on living rather than constantly working about my demise. Obviously, all of us are aware that life is going to end sometime. However, by choosing to live everyday to its fullest your life can become rich and rewarding.
If death is constantly on your mind, it is time to let these thoughts go....
