Effects of Hypnosis on Flow States and Golf Performance
At the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science, Sheffield Hallam University, researchers examined the effects of hypnotic intervention on flow states and golf-chipping performance of 3 participants.
The intervention involved teaching the golfers relaxation, imagery, hypnotic induction, hypnotic regression, and trigger control procedures over 5 weeks and 7 trials.Analysis indicated that the 3 participants increased their mean golf-chipping performance from the trials in Baseline 1 to intervention, with 2 returning to Baseline 1 performance after the intervention phase at Baseline 2. The intensity of flow experienced by the participants during the performance trials was measured using Jackson and Marsh's 1996 Flow State Scale. Two participants experienced higher flow during the intervention phase and much lower flow during Baselines 1 and 2. Finally, participants reported that the intervention seemed useful in keeping them confident, relaxed, and in control. These results support the hypothesis that relaxation, imagery & hypnosis can improve golf-chipping performance and increase feelings and cognitions associated with flow.
Much has been said about the desire to change. Indeed, this is the topic of many self-help experts, personal coaches, and even professional counselors, psychologists, and other psychotherapists. However, little is ever said about why a person would want to transform.
The first thing that I notice is that there is a universal desire for happiness. While many people will never be content – even if their situation is the envy of many others – generally when a person has something that is causing a high level of dissatisfaction in their life, then they develop an urge to become...
When you look in the mirror, do you see you own worst critic? Yes, I know that you are aware of every failing, mistake, and goof that you’ve made during your life. Well, you are not alone. All of us see that person staring back at us. On the other hand, what you are probably not seeing are all the positive things that you have accomplished in your life. My favorite Christmas movie is It’s a Wonderful Life starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reid. For me the most memorable quote in the movie is when Clarence the angel sent to help the George Bailey, the main character who is played by...
Why worry about the things that we can’t control? But we do. Our superior brain allows us to anticipate. This is often to our advantage as it allows us to plan ahead and adapt to what we think may happen. However, when our imagination is out of control, this same tool will cause us misery. At that point it often needlessly activates our fight-flight mechanism. This in turn makes us unhappy and can eventually damage our immune system.
Unlike others, people who excessively worry have learned this behavior over time. It could even have been caused by a family member or friend who...
